Primary vs. Secondary Sources

A primary source is an original fundamental and authoritative document pertaining to an event or subject of inquiry; a firsthand or eyewitness account of an event. (Dictionary.com)

Examples of primary sources:

  •  Patient interviews
  •  Clinical Trials
  •  Surveys of nursing staff

 A secondary source is any document that describes an event, person, place, or thing,  usually not created during the same time period. A biography is a secondary source. (Dictionary.com)

 Examples of primary sources:

  • Evaluations of studies
  • A bibliography from a journal article or book
  • A narrative of a famous nurse
  • Video on nursing skills
