US Code, September 1968 proclaiming National Hispanic Heritage Month

National Hispanic Heritage Month runs from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15, 2018.  Many government offices have information online to celebrate and feature Hispanic heritage.  The US Census Bureau has released a series of statistics and data to mark the occasion:

In September 1968, Congress authorized President Lyndon B. Johnson to proclaim National Hispanic Heritage Week, observed during the week that included Sept. 15 and 16. In 1988, Congress expanded the observance to a monthlong (Sept. 15-Oct. 15) celebration of the culture and traditions of those who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico and the Spanish-speaking nations of Central America, South America and the Caribbean.

Sept. 15 is the starting point for the celebration because it is the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico, Chile and Belize celebrate their independence days on Sept. 16, 18 and 21, respectively. Also, Columbus Day falls within the celebration month on Oct. 12.
