Databases

Search a specific education database for the most precise search and the largest number of articles in periodicals.

  1. You can narrow by full text, type of periodical and date.
  2. Think critically as you look at the long list of articles. Look at the article's subjects. Read the abstract to be sure it is appropriate for your assignment. 

Types of periodicals

1. Scholarly journals inform, report, or show original research and experimentation. 

  • Written by and for scholars or researchers in a specific subject area or discipline.
  • Strict review process by peers within the discipline.

2. Trade publications give practical information to people in an industry.

  •             Written by specialists or practitioners in a particular field or industry.
  •             Review by editorial staff.

3. Magazines provide information to a general audience on a range of topics.

  •            Written by the magazine’s staff, a field expert or a free-lance writer/journalist.

  •             Review by editorial staff.

Background information for research topics

Subject encyclopedias provide background information, terms, topics, and trends. The searches below include reference books in print and electronic format.

A Burke Global Catalog Search will find various formats at once: books in print and digital formats, articles, videos, and more.

You can narrow your search by format, or to items in the Education Library only.

Burke Library education books are on 2nd floor in the L’s. Current print periodicals are on the Lower Level. Reference books and librarian offices are on the 1st floor.
